Hey beauties! Welcome back to Creative Contour By Carla™! Today we are talking about sunscreen and if it really works under makeup! So let's think about it: does sunscreen really work under makeup?
To answer this question, we have to first take a dive into sunscreen and how it works.
Sunscreen is almost like a shield for your skin against the sun's harmful rays. Essentially the way sunscreen works is, depending on the formula you use, it will either block the sun's uv rays, or it will absorb the uv rays before your skin is damaged. A simple, yet important job!
So now that we know this, let's get into it!
Right off the bat, I can tell you that a physical sunscreen would not work well with makeup because it needs to physically sit on the top layer of the skin. Absorbing is not an option. So for the rest of this blog, I can discuss using a chemical sunscreen.
Before I get into it, I am aware that there are both benefits and downsides of each option, but I am trying my best to explain if sunscreen works under makeup, and I appreciate all of your patience while I discuss this topic in today's blog!
Alrighty, back to the topic at hand!
Chemical sunscreen is absorbed into your skin and behaves like a clear shield. It absorbs the sun's uv rays before they damage your skin. When it comes to makeup, this option makes the most sense, because you will be provided some protection overall. Now, when it comes to makeup there are two other things to consider. The first is if your makeup has sunscreen in it. Whatever level of spf your makeup has in it is what is ultimately protecting your skin. I would make an attempt to use a sunscreen that has a similar level of spf as your makeup so you are getting the best protection overall. If your sunscreen spf is higher than your makeup spf, you will not be reaping the full benefits of it.
No fear, beauties, because your favorite makeup artist has a solution! Of course, did you expect anything else!?! You all know I have your backs!
My recommendation would be to use a sunscreen mist that will work well with makeup. I find that setting sprays that have spf in them work best with makeup. You can reapply your spf later without disturbing your makeup look! The best part is, you can find some setting sprays that contain spf in a travel size, or you can make your own by using a travel sized mister. If you all need help with that, I have you at a later date!
So beauties, to truly answer your question, does sunscreen work under makeup? Kinda. You reap the most benefits of sunscreen by reapplying. So, using a spf mist that doesn't disturb your makeup is probably the best option! If you are unable to grab this product, you can also wear a large sun hat, or use an umbrella, depending on what you are doing!
