Updated: Apr 30, 2021

Hey beauties! By now you most likely already know this one. When you get enough sleep every night, your skin literally looks better. Yup, it sure does!

If you want to look good in this, get enough sleep every night!

So let's get into some of the main points. Make sure you get enough sleep! For adults, a general recommendation of 7-9 hours of sleep each night is a sufficient amount. What happens to your skin when you get enough sleep?

1. Cortisol Remains Low

Cortisol is the stress hormone that triggers inflammation flare ups, such as acne. Lack of sleep increases cortisol release. When increased cortisol is released, it triggers your sebaceous glands to over produce oil. The result is breakouts. When you get enough sleep every night, cortisol levels naturally decrease, avoiding this issue altogether!

2. Collagen Production

That's right my friends, collagen production happens while we sleep. During sleep, the body releases human growth hormone. Human growth hormone is a necessary ingredient for collagen production. So basically, if you want glowing skin, get those z's, beauties!

3. No Puffiness

Remember how I mentioned when you don't get enough sleep that Cortisol is released? When cortisol is released, the salt levels in your body increase, which leads to water retention. This means that your eyes will be puffy the next day. Totally avoid this by getting enough sleep every night!

Here are my tips to get enough sleep every night for beautiful skin:

1. Do not eat after 8:00pm

Yup, that's right! No food after 8:00pm. You can't sleep with a full tummy! If you want to drink anything, stick to water or decaffeinated tea.

Make sure your tea is decaf!

2. Cleanse and moisturize no more than 30 minutes before bed.

You should be at least washing your face every night before bed. I also recommend using a thick night cream to moisturize. Your skin will soak the product up while you are sleeping. I've also found personally that I feel a little more relaxed and ready for bed once I have cleansed and moisturized.

3. Exercise

Whether it is a leisurely walk or a serious gym session, make sure you get some exercise! Exercise increases the time spent during 'slow wave' sleep, or the deep sleep phase. It is best if you exercise at least 2 hours before bed.

4. Read A Book

Reading of course stimulates your mind. I've also found it to be quite relaxing. I find that reading a book relaxes my entire body, making me ready for sleep! I personally love to read love stories, a book that is light-hearted, or of course, beauty books!
